I like to set aside a secret space for myself as the day begins during which to write my morning pages and admire the plants growing in the garden from the second-story hallway window.

I often feel like a bird up there looking down from the window, and always feel so tiny and insignificant. I use these moments as a way to welcome perspective and attentiveness into my day from eye-open to eye-close.  Whenever I need a reminder to slow down or wake up, I return to the window, or at least to the knowledge that the window is there.

I created “Morning at the Window” to immortalize our first backyard poppy bloom. Having written them off after a weak start and vigorous weed competition, we awoke one morning to a host of marvelous red blooms demanding our attention from the window above.

Whether or not you have a window to look out during your day, I hope this print stirs up a daily delight in your soul over the slowness and sureness of growth. May it serve as a reminder to you that just because we can’t always see growth as it happens does not mean that bursting blooms aren’t just up ahead.
