Though “Ubuntu” was designed and printed in 2020, the philosophy embedded in it has been brewing inside me for 8 years. I was first introduced to the philosophy of Ubuntu while interning at the Iziko Museums of South Africa. On my last day, the museum conservator gifted me an Iziko t-shirt emblazoned with the word “UBUNTU.” While I admittedly had no idea what it meant at the time, I put it on. On my walk home that afternoon, I discovered it was a philosophy roughly translating to “I am who I am because of who we all are.” This is a truth that I have held close to my heart in all the years since. There is no me and there is no you. There is only us. May this print inspire within you the same awakening of spirit. May it heal you from the illusion of separateness.
“Ubuntu” has been hand-drawn, carved, and printed onto smooth handmade Kitakata paper using Black light-fast vegetable-oil based ink. It has been hand-colored using archival-quality, light-fast markers.
