Haikus have saved my life a million times over, and I hope this one can help save yours. There’s so much punch packed in so few words. It smells like a foggy forest morning and tastes like milkweed.
I created “Onward to Us” after the last of the eight chrysalides hatching on my mantle emerged as a butterfly. There was a gentleness to their emergence – to Basho’s words, too – that encourage a sort of unfamiliar slowness. I hope, like me, this print nudges you quietly and ever-so-slowly awake. In your own time.
“Onward to Us” measures 8″ x 10″ matted and has been hand-drawn, carved, printed, and embroidered onto an all-natural, handmade Kitakata paper. It was printed using Black light-fast vegetable-oil based ink, and colored using Pumpkin Orange archival-quality, light-fast ink.

Fun Fact: If you need some extra energy in our shared journey onward, just think of the Monarch Butterfly whose daily journey sometimes reaches 100 miles in a single day. If they can make it 3,000 miles south, I have faith that we can make it through the day.
